Cybersecurity Foundations Certificate Program

The Computer Engineering program offers an 18-unit certificate program to students seeking career opportunities in cyber security. The program aligns with the nationally defined knowledge areas and prepares the students with well-grounded fundamentals to become a professional in cyber security. Please note that this certificate program is for only SJSU undergraduate students.

Course Requirements

Here are the requirements that you need to know.

1. You must be a currently enrolled CMPE student at SJSU to pursue this certificate.

2. You need to complete the six core courses before applying for the cybersecurity certificate.

3. You are only allowed to repeat one of these courses once in order to still be eligible for the certificate.

4. You will need a minimum 2.0 GPA in the required courses for the certificate (including 1 course repeat), and you must have a minimum of a C in each required course.

5. When you are ready to declare it, ask the certificate coordinator to submit an Advisor Request

6. Check the status of the Advisor Request in your MySJSU Student Center.

7. Once the certificate has been added to your degree plan, you will receive a confirmation email at your sjsu.edu email address.

8. After you get the confirmation email, your certificate requirements will also be shown in MyProgress

9. Students can take either CMPE 184 (preferred), CMPE 132 or CS 166. 

10. Students can take either CMPE 130 (preferred) or CS 146. 

11. Students can take either CMPE 137, CMPE 181, CMPE 182, CMPE 183 to substitute CS/SE 158B.

12. Students that have taken CMPE 189 (Cybersecurity Clinics) can use it to substitute CMPE 132.

13. In Fall 2025, students can take CMPE 189 (SDN/NFV) to substitute CS/SE 158B, provided that they've completed CMPE 148.
